Experiences and needs of Dutch cancer survivors regarding lifestyle counselling: a qualitative study
Background:Cancer survivors face various short- and long-term consequences of their disease and treatment, which may negatively impact their quality of life. Healthy lifestyle changes can have a positive effect on these consequences but current counselling does not sufficiently meet their needs. This study explores the experiences and needs of cancer survivors regarding lifestyle counselling. Methods:A qualitative design comprising semi-structured interviews was used. We conducted 18 interviews with Dutch adult cancer survivors with various types of cancer, including people with limited health literacy. The data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. This study is part of the GLINK project, which aims to develop and evaluate an integrated lifestyle intervention for cancer survivors. Results:Dutch cancer survivors experienced current lifestyle counselling as fragmented and not structurally embedded, which requires them to be proactive in seeking support. Participants expressed a desire for stronger integration of lifestyle counselling within oncological (after)care, with clear information on available options and improved accessibility in terms of location, contact with professionals, and referral pathways. They reported a need for personalised, flexible support from professionals specialized in oncology, focusing on individual needs to ensure that patients feel seen and heard. Conclusions:This study provides insights into how lifestyle counselling for cancer survivors can be improved from the patients’ perspective. These findings can enhance the initiation of lifestyle conversations and referral processes and serve as a foundation for developing an integrated lifestyle intervention for cancer survivors.
Dit whitepaper is onderdeel van het magazine COMM’ON: Communication for the Common Good
This essay explores the implications of (generative) artificial intelligence (AI) for education, particularly in primary education. While AI can improve efficiency and support various educational processes, the rapid integration of technology in classrooms calls for a deeper consideration of which aspects of education should and should not be assigned to AI. Drawing on thinkers such as E.D. Hirsch, Thomas Pfau, and Simone Weil, I argue that the acquisition of knowledge is not merely instrumental but foundational to critical thinking, moral development, and human flourishing. Increasing reliance on AI may undermine human capacities such as memory, attention, and moral judgment, which are essential to the good life. The essay questions whether the promise of personalized learning via AI might actually contribute to cultural fragmentation, inequality, and a diminished capacity for attention. Rather than rejecting technology outright, I advocate for a more deliberate approach that prioritizes human formation and flourishing. Ultimately, the essay calls for educators and policymakers to rethink the role of AI in education, not only in terms of how we use it but also in terms of whether its integration aligns with the deeper purposes of education in a democratic and humane society.
PublicatieProfessional identity tensions in diverse contexts
We explore how pre-service teachers experience and deal with professional identity tensions during internships in diverse urban primary schools in the Netherlands. The research focuses on the challenges that arise when these teachers’ normative beliefs conflict with those of their pupils, parents, or colleagues. Through interviews with 10 pre-service teachers, five strategies which can help them handle such tensions were identified: adapting themselves to others’ perspectives, avoiding confrontation, not forcing the other to do something, being clear about one’s own beliefs and not adapting to other people’s beliefs, and seeking connection with other people. The findings highlight the complexity of balancing personal and professional identities, emphasizing the need for teacher training programs which can prepare teacher candidates and teachers for these normative challenges.
PublicatieNatuurlijk herstel
