Het is dun geworden

In maart 2022 verscheen het SCP-rapport Buiten kerk en moskee, het derde deel in de reeks ‘religie in een pluriforme samenleving’. Het rapport had een ontnuchterende boodschap. Anders dan door sommigen langgehoopt, blijkt de religieuze opleving uit het begin van deze eeuw niet te beklijven. Om zicht te krijgen op de implicaties van dit SCP-rapport heeft het lectoraat Bezieling & Professionaliteit op 21 september 2022 een ‘reflectiekamer’ georganiseerd. In deze besloten studiebijeenkomst is met een groep van betrokken onderzoekers, docenten en practitioners op het gebied van religie, zingeving en onderwijs nagedacht over het rapport. Dit verslag is een vrije verwerking van de inzichten die tijdens die bijeenkomst zijn opgedaan. Het doel van dit verslag is om de daar ontwikkelde inzichten tot collectieve kennis te maken en te delen met de deelnemers van de bijeenkomst en een bredere groep belanghebbenden, in de hoop dat het behulpzaam is bij verdere strategische doordenking. De opbouw volgt hetzelfde patroon als de bijeenkomst: eerst worden ‘bevindingen die raken’ beschreven, vervolgens worden de ‘implicaties in professionele contexten’ gedeeld en ten slotte wordt ‘visie en handelingsperspectief’ geformuleerd.

Ministers on Salvation: Soteriological Views of Pioneers and Pastors in the Protestant Church in the Netherlands

Missiology has always been inspired by soteriology, that is, Christian views of salvation. However, little is known about the actual soteriological beliefs of missionary practitioners. This article is an explorative qualitative study of soteriological beliefs among Dutch Protestant ministers who work in pioneer settings (N=20) and established churches (N=40). Our research shows that, contrary to what might be expected, these two groups (termed ‘pioneers’ and ‘pastors’) are very much alike with regard to their soteriological beliefs. The majority are convinced of the uniqueness of Jesus, and the connection of salvation with God and/or Jesus – even if this salvation is often expressed in immanent terms. Only two differences have been found between pastors and pioneers. Pioneers experience more challenges in communicating the uniqueness of Christianity and they are more likely to have traditional views of ‘eternal lostness’.

Het masterplan Basisvaardigheden schiet tekort voor de uitdagingen van vandaag en morgen. Geld en een sterk geloof in maakbaarheid zijn onvoldoende. De uitdagingen van de toekomst zijn van heel andere aard. We hebben een masterplan ‘Existentiële vaardigheden’ nodig dat kinderen en jongeren leert omgaan met de weerbarstigheid van het bestaan, zo schrijven lector Robert van Putten van de Christelijke Hogeschool Ede en rector Willem de Vos van het Christelijk Lyceum Veenendaal in deze opinie.

Open Dialogue: A case study on the influence of sharing or withholding reflections during a network meeting

In Open Dialogue, sharing of reflections by professionals constitutes an important contribution to promoting a polyphonic dialogue between participants. In the inner dialogue, past and future influence the present moment. In this study, we explore the influence of sharing or withholding reflections by professionals on the interplay between inner and outer dialogue. A case study was used with a multi-perspective methodology, which combined video recordings of a network meeting and interviews by using video-stimulated recall with the clients separately, and social workers together afterward. We found that the sharing of reflections by professionals stimulates the inner dialogue and creates an opening for sharing these in the outer dialogue. In addition, we observed that when reflections are withheld, the client's inner dialogue still continues, but their inner dialogue was not shared in the outer dialogue.

Conditions for cultural belonging among youth of immigrant descent in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom

Intergroup contexts of classrooms have an influence on mainstream and ethnic belonging of youth of immigrant descent. Based on the normative reference group theory, a higher level of ethic identification is expected in classrooms with a higher proportion of co-ethnic youth and, based on constrict theory, a lower level of mainstream identification is expected in ethnically more diverse classrooms. However, these relations between ethnic composition and cultural belonging may differ between countries due to differences in multicultural policies and colonial histories. Using two waves of data from CILS4EU survey, we conduct a cross-national comparison of the relation between intergroup contexts of classrooms and cultural belonging. The results imply that both theories cannot be generalized across national contexts, and other factors vary as well across countries. Therefore, research and policy in this area should pay more attention to the national context in terms of policies and histories.

Bestaanservaringen van maatschappelijk bevlogen vernieuwers

Veel geestelijk verzorgers voelen een grote maatschappelijke betrokkenheid bij de problemen waar onze samenleving voor staat. Binnen hun werk en vrije tijd proberen ze een steentje bij te dragen aan maatschappelijke vernieuwing. Dat, omgekeerd, maatschappelijk bevlogen vernieuwers baat zouden kunnen hebben bij geestelijke verzorging, zal voor velen een nieuw idee zijn. De auteurs van dit artikel opperen dit idee en staven het met resultaten uit hun onderzoeksproject.
