‘We durven niet gekend worden door God’

Het artikel zoomt in op de persoonlijke missionaire zoektocht van een Amsterdamse pionier, Maarten Vogelaar (1987). Die zoektocht is uitdagend en confronterend. Vanzelfsprekendheden redden het niet, het roer moet telkens weer om. Zelfredzame en gelukkige studenten blijken niet te zitten wachten op het Evangelie. Dat is confronterend. Op een eerlijke wijze doet de pionier verslag van zijn creatieve zoektocht onder jonge mensen in Amsterdam.

‘When it comes to relational trauma, you need people at the table’

This study aims to contribute to the evaluation of online therapy during Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns, by exploring family therapists’ experiences of therapy for twelve Sibling Sexual Abuse (SSA) families in the Netherlands. Seven transcripts of interviews with highly specialised Dutch family therapists were analysed using thematic analysis (TA). Two main findings emerged from this study. First, the Dutch therapists reported no acute worries about their clients’ sexual safety during the pandemic lockdowns. Nonetheless, the switch to online therapy for the SSA families created concern regarding victim safety in speaking out freely at home. Second, while the sudden switch to online therapy enabled SSA therapists to stay connected with their SSA families, therapists experienced a decline in therapy quality and in their own well-being. In the therapists’ experience, it was almost impossible to conduct their most fundamental interventions online, such as intervening in family relationships.

’Dicht bij Jezus’

Dit artikel gaat in op de visie op heil die naar voren komt in het bestverkochte christelijke boek van de afgelopen drie jaar: het dagboek Dicht bij Jezus van Sarah Young. In het dagboek geeft Young boodschappen door die ze van Jezus zegt te hebben ontvangen. De populariteit van het boek laat zich mogelijk verklaren door een voortdurende oproep tot rust en ontspanning. Geen overbodige luxe in onze overhaaste tijd, waarin aan veel mensen hoge eisen worden gesteld. Deze rust is volgens Young te vinden in intimiteit met Jezus. Dat laatste is dan ook de kern van Youngs spiritualiteit: aandacht en focus, gericht op Jezus. Dat maakt Youngs heil sterk mentaal geconcentreerd: zowel de oorzaak als de oplossing voor menselijke problemen is te vinden in het eigen denken. Een schaduwkant daarvan is dat de aandacht primair gericht wordt op het persoonlijk welbevinden, terwijl juist ook het leven in gemeenschap met de kerk en de betrokkenheid op de wereld belangrijke onderdelen zijn van een heilzame christelijke spiritualiteit.

“Dignifying the Ordinary”: Why, What, and How of Social Practice Theory in Christian Philosophy

It seems remarkable that several philosophers in the Reformed tradition have recently interacted with social practice theory without interacting with each other. This gave rise to the question as to whether they interact differently or similarly with social practice theory and to what extent Reformed philosophy might benefit from such an interaction. In this article, therefore, we aim to clear the way by addressing three strands in Reformed philosophy, namely, Nicholas Wolterstorff, the normative practice approach, and James K. A. Smith. We explore why they use social practice theory, what they do with it, and how they make it their own. Finally, we highlight what unites them and what divides them, and conclude with suggestions as to how they might benefit from each other’s work in social practice theory.

“Shared care” through instant messaging updates in youth care; an interaction analysis (Post-print)

In this paper we present an analysis of WhatsApp interactions in youth care. In family-style group care young people temporarily live in the family of professional foster parents (PFP), while they regularly visit their birth parents (BPs). Our data consist of instant messaging conversations between 11 pairs of PFPs and BPs during two months. Using Conversation Analysis (CA), we focused on the social interaction between BPs and PFPs, achieved in and through multi-modally constructed sequences of updates - responses. Updates are used by BPs in the context of the transfer from the child from/to the PFP to display responsibility towards the PFP and for the child. Also, PFPs use updates to provide BPs quasi primary access to the experiences of the child, centrally by sending images. Across these functions, we observe specific social actions of BPs and PFPs; while BPs work to display responsibility, PFPs subtly empower BPs as parents.
