In the context of changing values, practices and working arrangements, the worlds of journalism and art converge. Evaluating these professions in conflux and beyond their (supposed) opposing ideologies and discourses, remains both controversial and complex. Through a critical hermeneutic analysis, this paper highlights key areas of tension regarding the confluence of journalism and arts. It is argued that journalism is and always has been inextricably interwoven with the arts, a shared existence not limited to Western democracies.

De laatste paar jaar richt ik me als lector journalistiek en communicatie vooral op organisatieverhalen. Welk verhaal vertellen organisaties over zichzelf en welk gereedschap kun je ontwikkelen om ervoor te zorgen dat de verhalen die verteld worden ook deugen en deugd doen? Door deze vraag steeds te stellen, probeer ik een brug te slaan tussen filosofie en communicatie. Beide vakgebieden houden zich immers – zij het op een andere manier – bezig met zingeving. ‘Waartoe zijt gij op aarde?’ is de eerste vraag die ze allebei stellen. Dit levert me veel op.

De wereld is niet perfect. We weten het allemaal. Als mensen lopen we dikwijls tegen onze grenzen aan. Toch schemert daarvan maar weinig door in de verhalen die bedrijven, organisaties en politiek leiders ons vertellen. Ze spiegelen ons een werkelijkheid voor waarin we zelf niet hoeven te veranderen of waarin het ongemak van beperkte duur is.

A re-experiencing of the wilderness ideal is taking place in the Netherlands. This is expressed in the attention that is being devoted to projects in which agricultural land is transformed into nature. One of these projects is central to this article: the island Tiengemeten. We aim to study the experiences of visitors to this project in order to gain insight into the extent to which there are layers of depth visible in these experiences.

The network society is generally challenging for today’s communication practitioners because they are no longer the sole entities responsible for communication processes. This is a major change for many of them. In this paper, it will be contended that the normative practice model as developed within reformational philosophy is beneficial for clarifying the structure of communication practices.

In newsrooms journalists encounter numerous constraints accelerated by increasing technological and economic pressures. The complexity of the job and the need for (constant) innovation coupled with the rising call for transparency and accountability ask for journalists who “reflect-in-action”. Newsroom ethnographies consistently suggest that journalists experience a gap between the wish for increased self-reflection and its actual practice.
