You are a Christian teacher working at a school or involved in professional care provision for people with a wide range of different backgrounds. How do you interact with people from other backgrounds, and what are your considerations in doing so? Perhaps you’ve studied theology and wish to discuss the Bible and theology with young adult peers. The Theological University Kampen and Ede Christian University of Applied Sciences are offering the International Summer school titled ‘Reformed Theology and Pedagogy in an Intercultural Perspective’ during this summer. It provides an opportunity for intercultural reflection on the Reformed vision on pedagogy and education in different contexts.
By participating in this Summer school, you will extend your views on pedagogy and education from a Reformed theology perspective. You will develop strategies to connect with your students, children, or your colleagues. You will learn to practice your faith in your working environment. You will develop yourself across a range of subjects within an intercultural context of Christians from around the globe. The theology provides you with a sound reflection on what a Christian identity is and it touches on themes such as creation, sin and grace, and being in Christ. The pedagogy component teaches you how to develop your own practices and how these affect the way in which you deal with people subscribing to a different worldview.
The Summer school is an interactive five-day course. This consists of lectures, workshops, excursions and exchange between students and teachers. An evening programme is also provided during which you can share experiences.
The central theme in the programme is the intercultural reflection on a reformed vision of pedagogy and education in secular contexts. The reflection is organised around the following themes:
a. Christian identity: theological building blocks for a reformed view on man and creation.
- Aspects such as ‘creation’, ‘sin’, ‘being in Christ, through the Spirit’ will be covered;
- Reflection on our view of non-Christians and other religions around us.
b. Educational identity: aspects of Christian education in praxis:
- Together, we will try to make our findings as concrete as possible, in order to incorporate them into the life and the work of a Christian pedagogue in a secular and/or non-Christian context;
- Christian-educational identity, in which the person of the teacher and our view of the (non-Christian) student are central.
For whom is the Summer school meant?
- have a degree (University or College) in theology, teaching, or social work;
- work with young adults ranging 10 – 17 years of age;
- are interested in Christian identity in education;
- are open to intercultural contexts.
A sound grasp of the English language is a basic condition for participation! TOEFL (79) or IELTS (6,5).
There is room for a maximum number of 25 participants. The selection procedure includes filling out and sending an application form and several other documents (such as CV, letter of recommendation from church or institute, etc.). Sign up before 1 May 2018.
You will be asked to transfer the course fee upon being accepted into the programme. You will be notified of your acceptance in the first week of May. Please make sure you book your flight as soon as you are accepted to attend the Summer school. You should also ensure you have a valid visa (if applicable) for the duration of the Summer school.
